Apps You'll Love!

Today in History      FREE       (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/today-in-history-lite/id312028719?mt=8

This app lists historical events and historical figures that were born and died on specific dates.  Checking this app each day will spark student led discussions during Social Studies.  It will also allow students to connect the historical information from their electronic device to the information we are learning about in class.

Tower Math      $0.99     (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tower-math/id858919286?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D8

Students will practice their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts using this app.  In this game, students will build towers by solving math problems correctly.  The evil wizard is turning numbers into monsters and the only way to free the numbers is to build more towers.  This adventurous game allows students to choose the math skill level that they are most comfortable with.  It also allows students to challenge themselves by increasing the difficulty.

Fruity Fractions      $2.00     (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fruity-fractions/id859205944?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D8m

In fourth grade, we learn about and work with fractions about 1/3 of the school year.  It is so important for students to interact with fraction story problems throughout the school year as this is a real-world skill. Downloading this app and playing the game which is set in the tropical jungle will allow students to have fun and learn more about fractions.  This game builds on the previous skills and activities that the student completes, increasing in difficulty.   However, I love that each activity includes a mini-lesson about the skill prior to the activity that the student completes.  The developers of this app claim this was designed for kids age 6-10.

Brainfeed      FREE      (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id727189716?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D8

We learn about animals in Science.  We learn about inventions in Social Studies. Students choose non-fiction topics to write about when creating informational articles in Writing Workshop.  This is a great app to support the information we learn about in class.  It is also a great resource for research purposes.  This app includes a variety of informational and educational videos for students to view.  The videos are clear, narrated, and set to music to keep students engaged.

Trail of Tears      $0.99     (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/trail-of-tears/id773466631?mt=8

When discussing the different regions of the United States in Social Studies, one topic that always draws interest is the Trail of Tears.  Students beg to read and learn more about this historical event that is part of our nation’s past.  This app includes biographies of historical figures, pictures, time lines, and event information about Native American tribes that occurred between the years 1815-1860.

Stack the States     $0.99     (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stack-the-states/id381342267?mt=8

In Social Studies, we memorize all the states and their capitals.  We also learn where the states are located on a map.  This game allows students to learn and practice what the states look like, the location of the states, the capitals of the states, and it even include fun trivial facts.  This is a motivating app in which students will have fun learning the states and capitals.  After using this app, they are sure to do well on their 50 states and capitals test at the end of the year!

Write About This     $3.99     (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id601375313?ign-mpt=uo%3D8

Each year, I have students tell me that they don’t like to write.  Because Writing Workshop is one of my subjects to teach, it is always my goal to get my students to LOVE writing by the end of the year.  Even though this app is a little more expensive compared to the others, I believe that it will help students to feel more comfortable with writing.  I have found that the more students practice free writing, the more they enjoy it.  This app includes pictures and writing prompts that encourage creative stories.  It allows for sharing and the collaboration between students.

Kid Weather      $1.99     (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id576008071?ign-mpt=uo%3D8

Our first two units in Science deal with weather.  At the beginning of each school year, we encourage our students to watch the weather on the news, listen to the forecast on the radio, or read about it in the newspaper or on the computer.  All of these are great resources, but students could also download this kid-friendly app.  Learning how to read the weather forecast is a real-world skill that is used for planning purposes: appropriate clothing, outdoor activities, etc.  We would also use this app in class, as students record the weather forecast each day for two weeks and discuss the findings.

Brush of Truth   $1.99     (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id500563146?ign-mpt=uo%3D8

This is an engaging app, especially for students who are reluctant readers.   This interactive reading material allows students to make decisions at throughout the story; therefore, the reader is in charge of the outcome of the story.  Each story includes twenty different endings, so readers can go back and re-read stories while changing the outcomes.

BrainPOP          FREE      (iOS)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/brainpop-featured-movie/id364894352?mt=8

My students LOVE BrainPOP which includes educational videos about different topics across all subject areas.  I highly recommend this app because of how engaging it is for my students.  They love to watch Tim and Moby go on adventures while learning about specific topics.  I have even found myself using it to learn about something.  This is a wonderful resource that both kids and adults will love.
